Mitch Marner

Impactful Offseason For The Toronto Maple Leafs and Their Fans

Leaf management moved away from the ‘Core 4’ formula to a ‘Team Depth’ concept in building the team. It is uncertain if management was pushed in this direction by Mitch Marner’s decision to leave or a view that an unbalanced lineup would not get the team to the Stanley Cup.

The team made the playoffs in nine successive seasons, but did not get past the second round. They have watched the Florida Panthers hoist the Stanley Cup in successive seasons. The Panthers are the team to beat in the NHL and have a team built on the depth of four competitive lines.

Ultimately, the Leafs parted ways with President Brendan Shanahan. Mitch Marner decided to move on from the Toronto Maple Leafs to the Vegas Golden Knights, to the disappointment of many Leaf fans. Team management allotted the money that would have gone Mitch Marner’s way to build team depth.

Leafs Are A Different Team

The team does look different, but only time will tell if this years version will be better, equal or worse than last year. To be equal or better, they will need to make the playoffs first, then have some playoff success.

To be fair, it may take several seasons to allow management time to fine-tune and build the depth of the team to see if this version of the team will be more successful long-term.

The Leafs had a very slow start to the season, which frustrated a large portion of the Leafs Nation. Their overall team play and compete level has improved since Christmas and they are currently sitting 2 points out of the playoffs in a very competitive division.

Marner Should Be Remembered As One Of The Best All-Time Leafs!

It is often difficult for a team’s fan base to watch a home grown talent leave in free agency. One only has to look to John Tavares and his departure from the New York Islanders for an example. Tavares upset the Islander fan base by signing with the Leafs as a free agent, and he is booed every time his skates hit their home ice.

Mitch Marner was a fan favourite and a home grown talent. He had tremendous success in Toronto and was beloved by the fan base. However, upon signing with the Vegas Golden Knights, he has received much negative press in the Toronto area media. And this is unfortunate and not deserved.

Mitch Marner is a Vegas Golden Knight. He and his team are having a successful season so far. The Knights currently find themselves sitting in first place in the Pacific Division of the Western Conference. They have 60 points in 48 games. Marner has 51 points in 48 games, good for 24th in the league scoring race.

He has had a great career in Toronto. Mitch was successful in every way, minus winning the Stanley Cup. This may have be remedied this past season given how close they were to knocking off the Panthers, but that is another story.

He ranks as one of the most offensively productive and talented Leaf players in the history of the franchise. Hopefully, he is respected as such while he is still playing hockey, rather than waiting until retirement.

Mitch Marner ranks #6 on the Leafs All-Time Regular Season points lists. He has amassed 741 points in 657 games. In order from #1 to #5 respectfully are Mats Sundin (Centre), Darryl Sittler (Centre), Dave Keon (Centre), Auston Matthews (Centre) and Borje Salming (Defense). He ranks as their highest scoring Right Winger ever.

Marner ranks #5 on the Leafs All-Time Playoff point list with 63 points in 70 games played. Only Gilmour (77 pts), Sundin (70 pts), Keon (67 pts) and Sittler (65 pts), are ahead of him.

And, “no”, Marner has not won the Stanley Cup. Some media folks point to this lack of playoff success as a reason for negativity. But, the Leafs have not won the Stanley Cup since 1967, despite the efforts of many past Leaf Greats who have not tasted the Stanley Cup.

Mitch Marner gave all of his efforts in trying to win the Stanley Cup. Any comments to the contrary are without merit and unfair. Mitch is a competitor who brings his best efforts to the rink each outing. His offensive and defensive talents have been and continue to be elite.

Do not blame or diminish his contributions because of his lack of physicality. That is not his game. It is a team game. Others can bring that dimension. But if playmaking, goal scoring and penalty killing are important, then give Mitch Marner his due and recognize him as one of the best Leafs of All-time.

Respect his right as a young person to make important decisions in his own life. Mitch and his family did receive much negative and hurtful attention during Toronto’s last playoff run. It does have an effect on a person and on a family. This attention may or may not have impacted on his decision to move. He is a husband and father. Mitch has fulfilled his contract with Toronto with Honour. He has created very good hockey memories for himself and Leaf Nation.

In his mind, it was time for a change. One famous idiom is often used for young folks, “the world is your oyster”, meaning that you can go anywhere or do anything that you want. So, Vegas came calling. Well, go forth young man and best of luck.

Hey, what would you do facing a similar decision in life?

So, when Mitch returns to Toronto as a member of the Golden Knights, greet him with applause. He has helped create many happy Leaf moments. He deserves and has earned the positive respect of Leaf Nation. He has paid his dues. Hockey is a sport and entertainment. He has entertained.

Thank you Mitch for your time as a Toronto Maple Leaf!

Keep your stick on the ice and stay safe!
